DA-HONG SEETOO BIOGRAPHY

Da-Hong Seetoo
, was born in Shanghai and began playing the violin at the age of five. At the time of the Cultural Revolution, during which Western music was forbidden, he was forced to practice with the windows closed. His father, a professor of violin at the Shanghai Conservatory, used months of his salary to buy the family a reel-to-reel tape recorder so that he would be able to copy any recordings which were being circulated underground. When the machine needed repairs, ten year-old Da-Hong began to figure out how to fix it and upgrade the family's primitive stereo system.

When the Boston Symphony visited China in 1979 after the thaw, Da-Hong Seetoo was already a graduate student at the Shanghai Conservatory, having skipped the first four years of college. Upon hearing Da-Hong play, Joseph Silverstein, the distinguished concertmaster of the Boston Symphony, personally recommended him to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He subsequently studied at Curtis and at the Juilliard School under Ivan Galamian and Dorothy Delay. Seetoo's performance experience includes concerto appearances with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Shanghai Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Da-Hong Seetoo has emerged as one of a handful of elite audio engineers, using his own custom-designed microphones, monitor speakers, and computer software. His recent clients include the Emerson, Miró, and Tokyo String Quartets, the Beaux Arts Trio, pianists Daniel Barenboim and Christopher O'Reilly, violinist Gil Shaham, the Singapore and Taipei Symphony Orchestras, and David Finckel and Wu Han for the ArtistLed label. His 2005 recording of the Mendelssohn String Quartets for Deutsche Grammophon was nominated for three Grammy Awards, and won Best Classical Album and Best Engineered Album.  He first met David Finckel and Wu Han at the Aspen Music Festival in 1982 and has worked closely with them ever since.
