On June 25th, David and Wu Han
performed a program featuring the world premiere of Pierre
Jalbert's Cello Sonata at Harris Concert Hall as part of the
Aspen
Music Festival. The festival's "Once Upon a Time"
theme was apparent with Janácek's Pohádka (Fairy Tale),
Edwin Finckel's Brief Encounter, and Grieg's Cello Sonata in a minor,
op. 36, which is picturesque and evocative of folk tales.
Jalbert's new work was commissioned for the duo by Linda and Stuart
Nelson, with additional support provided by American Public Media.
A cast of distinguished musicians were present for the event including
conductor Jeffrey Kahane, bassist Edgar Meyer, and composer Anders
Hillborg. Also in attendance was Gayle Ober, American Public Media's
Director of Classical Music Programming.
Additionally, the duo gave Distinguished Artist Master Class on
Tuesday June 25th in Harris Concert Hall.
Video of the entire
performance can be watched online at medici.tv.
The website features a total of ten concerts from this year's Aspen
Music Festival in addition to a variety of other live performances
and informative videos.
Jalbert's Cello Sonata aired nationally on American Public Media's
Performance Today, reaching 245 member stations and over 250,000
listeners. Listen on the web at performancetoday.org.
